My laptop, IBM Thinkpad 1400 series, with a newly
installed Belkin Networdk Card, will not open a web page
with Internet Explorer when connected through a router.
It will when connected directly to the modem. If I go to
the LAN icon in control panel it says it is connected but
Internet Explorer will not open the page. I have used the
router to connect other desktop PCs without a problem. I
have tried to set the IP address but I still have a
problem there as well.

Are you using DHCP on the router? Can you ping the router's LAN IP address?
Have you run IPCONFIG to see what IP address info you're getting?

After you connect the laptop, load a cmd.exe prompt and type:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

And see if that helps. Also make sure you aren't connecting to the uplink
port on the router
