Connecting to existing connection

I have 2 desktop comps on a LAN that use a local phone line to my ISP
through the modem in one of the comps. If I plug a phone in anywhere in my
house, for example, I can us this line for a phone (as long as I don't have
a connection to my ISP.)

Now let's say I have a connection established on this phone line by using
one of my desktops. I would like to be able to get a laptop on this
connection occasionally, which I thought could be done simply by plugging it
into this phone line. Doesn't seem to work.

Is there a way to do this? I'm not explaining my situation too well, I
realize. I'd be glad to add anything additional if it would help.

Thx in advance

Dave

Only one device at a time can use the dial-up phone connection. It's not
like there is an open signal on the line that any modem can tap into once
the connection to the ISP is established. The only way to share the internet
connection on the laptop is to have it join the LAN. From your description
it sounds like you are already using ICS to share the internet on the
desktops. You could either add a wireless router to your LAN configuration
or attach a wireless access point to the desktop with the modem connection.
If the laptop doesn't have wireless built in you'll need an adapter for that
too.

Thanks for the clear explanation Ralf. Not what I wanted to hear, but I
understand. I don't want to bother with a wireless router setup (and yes I
am using ICS), so I guess that ends it for now, but I'll keep a copy of your
reply on file.

Appreciate your comments very much -
Dave
