Connecting to a server

Hi,

I just installed a desktop in my office and connected it to a file sharing
server (win03). I assigned a letter to a specific server folder where my
work is, checked the 'connect at power up' option and all worked fine.
However, when I restart the PC, I cannot connect to the server. I need to
manually login onto the server.

What have I done wrong? Why wouldn't the 'connect at power up' option save?

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Mike

Is the server part of a domain or a workgroup? If it's a domain what version
of XP do you have (Home or Pro) and is the desktop joined to the domain? If
it's a workgroup do you have a matching user name and password on the server
and the desktop?

Did you add the user account and password to the server? Is the new
desktop running XP Pro? Home and Media Center cannot join a domain and
will need to authenticate every time they want to access domain
resources.

You'll need to be more descriptive about your server, your network, and
the workstation to get more focused help.

The PC runs on XPpro and joint to the local network using the same workgroup
name. The PC name is Moon and the server has a user Moon w/o password. So
that when the PC boots up should login into the server as Moon. I have other
PCs setup this way and all work.
Thank you.
Mike.

So you have a server but aren't using Active Directory? You don't have a
domain, just a peer-to-peer Workgroup?

The computer name should never be the same as the user name. This is bad
practice. Change the computer name to something else and make sure you
have a *user* account named "Moon" with a password and the identical
*user* account and password on your server.

A workgroup usually runs via netbios. If you have a computer and a user
named Moon this is probably the cause of your problem. Create a new user on
both the desktop and the server. Make sure both have the same user name and
password.
