connecting my laptop to my tv for dvd movies

When I connect my computer to my tv using an s-viedo cable the movie did not
show up on the tv screen but my desktop and everything else did. So I played
around with my computer and now nothing shows up on the tv. What do I need to
do to be able to play a dvd on my computer and watch it on a tv?
