connecting after wrong user/pass is entered?

in windows xp, using a wireless connection (comp to the router).

a friend was using the windows zero configurator to connect. It was
connecting automatically. But somewhere along the line he must've
somehow changed the network key windows stores and windows connects
with. (maybe the router reset and he couldn't connect and it asked
him for a network and he tried the wrong one).

Then I think it saved the wrong one. The solution was to look for
that network name under "preferred networks" in wireless network
connection properties(right click, properties), to remove it. Then go
to view wireless networks(right click, view wireless networks), then
connect, enter the network key, and then it connects automatically.

However, what if it happens again. I won't be there. What i'd like is
some icon for them that enters the right user/pass.

I don't want the wrong network key being saved, and then it just
doesn't connect and gives no error about a wrong network key. Infact,
when that happens, even when I entered the right network key it didn't
connect. I had to delete my network's name from 'preferred networks'
and then when connecting i entered tthe right network keyand it
worked.

I may have that wrong, I have only ever used wireless in the context
if setting it up for others. I don't have it at home to mess with!!
But that's how I remember fixing it.

i'm suprised i didn't see an error saying the wrong network key was
being entered

With dialup you could make an icon that entered the user, pass, tel num.
Why not with wireless, an icon that enters the network key?! and works
or deals with the issue of a wrong network key being saved by windows
somewhere, as described.

When/if you manually disconnect from a wireless network that has been set to
automatically connect it will revert to manual connection. It will sit there
forever doing nothing until the operator picks a network to connect to in
"view available wireless networks". Removing and recreating the preferred
network settings for the network in question restores the automatic
connection. Your friend will have to learn how to correct this situation
himself.
