Connecting 3 XP pro machines via serial (direct cable) connections.

I am attempting to set up a mini network with one XP Pro pc connected
to 2 others via serial ports. I have successfully managed to connect
up the machines with direct cable connections.

The problem I have is that only one connection can be active at any
time. It doesn't matter which order I connect them in, when I attempt
to connect the second it fails with the error "TCP/IP CP reporting
error 31".

Is it possible to have 2 simultaneous direct cable connections from an
XP Pro machine?

After trawling the message groups it appears that the reason that this
isn't working is that a direct cable connection uses a virtual dial-up
adapter and Windows XP Pro will only let you have one. Is this
correct?

If this is true then does this also mean that if, for example, I was
to replace the 2 direct cable connections with 2 modem connections I
would still have the same problem?

Thanks in advance

Neil
