Connecting 2 Win XP machines

My friendly local computer store has sold me an ethernet cable marked "cross
wiring" that they said would be all I needed to connect two computers. Using
this cable I clicked the "Set up home network" link on the Network
Connections screen and ran the Network Setup Wizard on both machines. They
still refuse to recognise each other. I have tried disabling firewall on
both machines. Any other suggestions please?

Unless the firewall is the Microsoft firewall, uninstall rather than disable
while testing.

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand and solve the
problem.

What version of Windows XP does each computer run: original, Service
Pack 1, or Service Pack 2?

How do your computers connect to the Internet?

What connection method did you specify when the Network Setup Wizard
asked?

How are you trying to get them to recognize each other? What exactly
happens when you do it? If there's an error message, what does it
say?
