Hey all,

Can someone help me out? I'm connected to an unsecured wireless
connection in my building with a good to excellent connection but i
can't get online. I've been using this connection for quite a while
and it's always worked for me. The other day, a friend of mine was
playing around on the ip address's when trying to get my computer to
connect to his secure wireless connection and since then, I've had this
problem.

Am guessing you'll need more information than this, but please help?!

Thanks!

Ron

Ron,

Connecting to the Internet, thru a network that you don't control, is frequently
tricky. Aside from the legality issues, there are always going to be stability
issues. But let's see if we can solve your problem anyway. Look at "ipconfig
/all", and see if we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked

Thanks Chuck,

Here's what I've found as far as the ip config....does this help?

OK, Ron,

You're getting an IP address and other settings. I wonder what 192.168.1.1 is
though. Can you ping that address successfully?

What exact error message are you getting? Let's test your DNS access to start.

Chuck,

Unfortunately, I can't ping 192.168.1.1 successfully. When i tried to
ping it in the command prompt, this is what it said:

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data

Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out

Ping stats for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% Loss)

As far as your other question about the browser error message, it says,
"The page cannot be displayed. The page you are lokoing for is
currently unavailable. The website might be experiencing technical
difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."

When I tried opening firefox, I got the "server not found. Firefox
can't find the server at www.espn.com" error message. (espn.com is my
home page)

Let me know what other information you might need. Thanks

Ron

Ron,

OK, we may be seeing the problem. If you are actually connecting to this
network (owner unknown), and you are accepting DHCP settings, and the DNS server
can't be pinged, then maybe there is no DNS server using that address.

My suspicion is that you are using someone's network without permission, and
that person has made what is called a honeypot. They actually make manual
settings on their network components, and use DHCP settings to trap intruders.
You are being trapped.

If you tried the 4 way diagnostic that I referred to, and got a negative result
on each of the 4 tests, I would suspect one of two:
1) You are not actually connecting to this unknown WiFi network.
2) You are connecting, but, as I stated above, it's a honeypot. No Internet
connection at all. I've read, in DSLR Forums, guys who boast of setting up just
what you're seeing.

I think you're going to have to get your own Internet service, if you want
reliable access.

Of course, if your friend, playing around with your computer, caused your
problem, then scenario #1 is quite likely. Without knowing what your friend
did, though, I'm not sure how we can proceed.
