Connected to network, but can't see other machines

Here is the issue:
I have a PC that connects to the network, able to browse the internet (which
is provided by a web proxy), able to ping other machines on the network, and
able to RDP into servers. IP address is provided dynamically via a DHCP
server, so it isn't a gateway or masking issue as no other PC's are having a
problem. Network is a workgroup. Issue is, the machine is unable to connect
to or browse any of the other PC's or servers on the network. I cannot
resolve any connections, either via name or IP address, so this user is
unable to get to any mapped drives. When clicking on View workgroup
computers in My Network Places, all I get is a beep and nothing else. No
events or errors noted in the events log.
Any thoughts on what else I need to check?

Hi,

First thing you should try eliminating Winsock corruption. To do that,
follow these steps:

1. Open Network Connection

2. Right click on LAN and choose Properties

3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

4. Click Uninstall

5. Click Start / Run, type regedit

6. Delete the following registry keys:

a.. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

b.. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

7. Restart the computer

8. Open Network Connections

9. Right click LAN connection and choose Properties

10. Click Install, then Protocol and click Add

11. Click I have Disk and type C:\WINDOWS\inf

12. On the list choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click OK

13. Restart your computer

After this take a look, if you have all protocols and services installed.
Open Network Connection, right click on LAN and choose Properties. You must
have:

a.. File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
b.. Client for Microsoft Networks
c.. QoS Packet Scheduler
d.. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Try removing and reinstalling the first two ones (File and Printer sharing
for Microsoft Networks, Client for Microsoft Networks).

If this does not help, please provide us with more information, like:

.. Error you receive when you try to connect to one of the computers
via IP or name

.. Error you receive when you run "net view" command

.. Can you see this machine, when you run "net view" from a working
machine?

If you can ping each other and RDP, it could be the firewall issue. Make sure you enable file and printer sharing on the firewall.

Firewall is disabled on the NIC. This is a production workstation that has
worked fine up until today.

Strange noises when you're trying to use the network frequently point to LSP /
Winsock corruption.

Regarding step 4 in your directions, when I select TCP/IP the option to
uninstall is greyed out. None of the other NIC protocols are. Any ideas or
am I looking at reinstalling the NIC (want to avoid this as I don't have the
original software).

Tried this from your blog:
To fix a corrupted LSP / Winsock in XP SP2:
Start - Run - "cmd".
Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.
Reboot.
No joy. Any other suggestions?

There are multiple possible solutions to an LSP / Winsock problem, and not one
of them have been found to be consistently more effective than the others. Some
of them may fix some problems, but find additional problems when run a second
time. Try each solution, if applicable to your system, one after the other,
until your problem is resolved.

Hi,

Just go to step 6. It will reset the winsock, which can also be done using
this to commands: Netsh in tip reset reset.log, Netsh winsock reset. Also
run ipconfig /all and take a look at the node type. Did you try browsing the
network in Safe mode with networking? Which error do you get when you run
"net view" in command prompt?

Tried that already, but since I couldn't uninstall TCP/IP, I couldn't
reinstall it, and winsock isn't rebuilt. I've also run the winsock reset.
Node type is hybrid.

Net view gives the following error:
The service has not been started.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2184
I looked through the services, don't see anything not started. Is this a
service like BINLSVC on a RIS server that you can't see in the services
window? If so, what is the exact name of the service and how do I set it up
to start automatically?

Thanks, everyone for all the tips. While it's been a great learning
experience, it hit a point where time invested was not worth the effort to
continue troubleshooting, so I booted to the disk and ran the repair console.
Other than having to reinstall some drivers, everything was saved, so it's
all good.
