Connected firewire drives and transfer speeds

Greets,

I am hoping someone here can assist me with the extremely slow transfer
speeds I am getting with two firewire external drives.
I have one Lacie 250mb and one Maxtor (brand new) 300gb drive. When I
transfer files, by way of copy or move within WINXP Home, it takes close to a
half hour for about 2 gigs of data to transfer.
I can write to either of the drives quite easily and fast. Also, I had them
both directly plugged into my firewire card and then daisy chained them and
the speeds were agonizingly slow both ways.
Oddly enough, through my laptop, with a card reader for my compact flash
cards, I can write to either drive through my network, and it will take about
four minutes for 2 gigs of data to transfer.
Is there some setting I need to correct to allow the firewire drive to
firewire drive transfers to be as fast as the internal to firewire?

Thank you.

My apologies for not defining which version of Windows. It is SP2.
Thank you kindly for your response.
