I just bought a laptop with Vista. How to connect my windwowslive account to
windows mail? I Have been asked for server, POP3, etc which i do not know and
understand. Thank you

Follow the settings given here:

Use port 587 rather than port 25 for the SMTP server.

Although it accepts the newer Live.com addresses, Windows Mail's
account setup wizard is hard-coded to reject Hotmail and MSN addresses.
To get around that, when you enter your Hotmail/MSN email address initially,
use a fake one, such as (e-mail address removed). After the account setup is complete,
go back and correct your email address.

I itried your suggestion, Gary, but I got a message back saying the system
could not find the SMPT (587) server , and it did not work. I just want to be
able to send internet material by e-mail, but Windows Mail does not seem to
want to co-operate with my Windows Live Hotmail account. Is there an easier
way? Regards, Bob

It is likely that there is an error in your settings.
We can't help unless we can see the exact error message.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

The host 'smtp.live.com (port 587)' could not be found. Please verify that
you have entered the server name correctly.

Remove the "(port 587)" from the outgoing server name.
Tools - Accounts - (youraccount) - Properties - servers

It should be
smtp.live.com

You can change the port number to 587 under the "Advanced" tab

You misunderstood the infos given to you.
1.) Tools > Accounts > highlight your account > Properties > Servers >
under outgoing mail , enter smtp.live.com NOT smtp.live.com (port 587) >
click Apply

2.) [Tools > Accounts > your account >Properties] > Advanced....
under Outgoing mail (SMTP), change it to 587 NOT 25
under This server requires a secure connection (SSL), put a checkmark on the
box
under Incoming mail (POP3), enter 995
under This server requires a secure connection (SSL), also put a checkmark.
Click Apply > OK

Should I remove the port designation from the incoming server even though it
wasn't flagged?
I'm not sure about how or why to use the Advanced tab. I did not see any
instructions anywhere and would appreciate your help. Bob

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

I am having exactly the same problem and it is driving me mad. I've tried
what has been suggested by altering my ports in the advanced tab but no joy.
I can receive but it will not send. I get the below error meaage. Let me
know if you get anywhere sorting it.

You still don't have the necessary SSL option enabled.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced,
then enable the SSL option (two places).

Got it, but got something I did not expect. All the Inbox from Windows Live
went into Windows Mail and that is not what I want because all my folders are
in Windows Live. Any way to keep the functionality of Windows Live? I just
wanted Windows mail to have a way to send internet stuff. Thanks. Let me know
if I can recover.

By default, most POP email clients will remove successfully downloaded
emails from the server. To change that default:
In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, select your mail account,
Properties, Advanced, select "Leave a copy of messages on server."

Looks like just what was in Inbox when Windows Mail kicked in went into
Windows Mail. Normal mail to Windows Live seems to be ok, and stays where it
should.
