connect to fax printer on some other machine

Hi,

I am using windows 2000 fax service. The application is using Faxcom
1.0 library. Right now the application is connecting to the local
machine containing the fax server. Is it possible to connect to some
other machine having the fax server?

If yes, then using the faxcom 1.0 library in windows 2000 how can i
connect to some other machine contains the fax server? Are there any
restrictions while trying to connect to the fax server on some other
machine?

Regards,
Ashima Atul

No. The Fax service included with all versions of Windows 2000 is stand
alone, single user. The only sharable Fax services currently offered by
Microsoft are supplied with Small Business Server and Windows Server 2003.

You cannot use Faxcom 1.0 library to connect to non-local Fax Servers or
Printers. Look at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/fax/faxlegacy_1u42.asp - this has
details about the various client-server combinations, which are possible &
which are not.

Bottom-line: Fax SDK available on Windows 2000 can be used only for local
faxing. Fax Service Extended COM API Model is required to connect to remote
fax printer/server.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the info. I read this yesterday and realized that
it's not possible for me to use fax service available in windows 2000
to submit faxes to a non-local fax server. Is it possible to use Fax
Service Extended COM API Model in windows XP to connect to the fax
server on windows 2003 server machine or another windows XP machine?

The scenario is that I have a fax application in windows XP that uses
Fax Service Extended COM API Model and the fax modem is on other
machine (either windows 2003 server or windows XP). Is it possible for
me to submit faxes to Windows 2003 server or windows XP machine (having
the fax modem) from another windows XP machine that is having the fax
application?

Regards,
Ashima

On any given machine Fax Printer needs to be shared for remote clients to
connect to it. Sharing of Fax Printer is not allowed in Windows XP. It's
allowed on Windows Server 2003 (all flavors) or SBS Server 2003 (all
flavors).

Answer to your question is you can submit faxes from any machine to Windows
Server 2003. But you cannot submit faxes from any machine to Windows XP Fax
Printer as it cannot be shared.
