connect to exchange 2003 on outlook 2003 via VPN

Hello,

We have 48 mobile computers with w2k on them and want to be able to
connect to our exchange server via VPN. We are using 3com superstack
firewall that comes with a vpn solution. When we have a w2k machine
connected via the VPN we start the setup process of connecting to exchange.
We put in the ip of our exchange server and it returns the server name and
verfies the user. However once done with the setup and running outlook 2003
it cannot connect to the exchange server are we missing a step? Any other
ideas on how to accomplish this without having to goto XP. It's too
prohibitive at the moment. Thanks in advance.

What error message do you receive when trying to connect to Exchange?

You might be hitting an issue I've seen when using outlook 2003 over a
VPN regardless of exchange version. I've been running exchange 5.5 up
till now, and last night I installed my first 2003 exchange server to
the site, and am moving mailboxes to it this week to eventually
decomission the 5.5 box.

When I VPN in (watchguard firebox using the secure client VPN
software) with any version of office up through office xp, when I
connect to the exchange server it was pretty much immediate. But put
2003 on the client, and suddenly it takes like 2 minutes. Even though
while it's taking 2 minutes to connect I can ping by netbios name,
FQDN, even map drives, and run admin tools remotely and all resolve
instantly, outlook 2003 takes about 2 minutes before it'll get to the
"connected" stage, even though I click send/receive to try to get it
to happen quicker. No errors on either the client nor the server, and
as stated, it's not a name resolution issue, as every other possible
function works just fine, and instantly.

On my new 2003 exchange server, I have the same issue still - it was
one of the things I was hoping would go away when I migrated to the
newer server version. Evidently there's issues with 2003 client and
2003 server together - I can duplicate it at will. And it doesn't
happen with office 2000 or 2002. :(

You may have to give it a few minutes and see if it "eventually"
connects.
