Conflict between the Modem and the speakers

Hello,

I have a System with the following configuration - P
III, 128 MB RAM. OS is Windows 2000 Professional. I have a
peculiar problem. When I install the modem the speakers
stop responding - they don't work. I have D - link modem.-
model DFM 560ES. But when I install the driver it says -
Conexant 56K Data, Fax, Voice Modem - installed in Com-1.

If I uninstall the modem the speakers start working -
I can play anything in winamp. If I install the modem
again and restart the system the speakers don't work. I
even disabled the modem speakers. That also doesn't work!!!

This problem started when I formatted the partition
having Windows 98SE and installed windows 2000
professional. I have single booting and 20GB hard disk
with 4 partitions of 5 GB each.

Please help me resolving this.

Hi,

Try this....Start, settings, control panel, sounds and
multimedia, audio. Notice the prefered devices. When you
install the modem it probably sets itself as the prefered
device. Come back here after you install the modem and
switch back to the sound card. Problem should go away.

Sounds as if your motherboard is not truly/fully ACPI compliant
and cannot successfully share device IRQs. The easiest way around
this it to do a complete reinstall of Windows 2000. When you are
prompted, early on in the install proces, to hit F6 to install
additional drivers, hit F7. No typo there, the prompt will be to
hit F6 and instead you'll hit F7. This will force Windows 2000 to
use a non-ACPI HAL (HAL=Hardware Abstraction Layer). When the
install completes, you modem and sound card will be assigned
different IRQs and you problems, at least for now, will be over.
