Is there a way to configure a Windows XP firewall enabled on a LAN
interface so that I can still share (for read/write) my folders on the
local network ?

You open the Wnidows Networking Ports on XP. That's 137-138 UDP and 139 and
445 TCP to the IP/machine on the LAN that you want to share resouces.

Activate the exception for File and Printer Sharing.

In my experience, I had trouble with file sharing in a network with a
mixture of win98 and winXp Sp2. I can share any of the files TO the XP
system, but not vicey-versy. Trying to access the files on the XP from
the 98 system, I get a request for password that, so far, I have not
figured out. It's not any of the ones that I have assigned. I have
several briefcases that I used to keep certain files in sync, and they
will only work if the briefcase itself is located on the XP system.

Anybody experienced this and found out how to make it work. It's not
critical, but is annoying.

Have you set up a guest account on the XP machine and assigned it a
password? That works for me in my setup ( 1XPHome, 1 2000Pro, 1 98SE).

I don't use briefcases. I just setup a shared folder on each system and
transfer back and forth files I need to share.
