configuring Start menu items

I am setting up a new XP Home PC for a child and am having trouble doing the
following. I would appreciate advice on how to do them.

1. On the Start menu (not the "classic" style), how do I add shortcuts to
the area above the line. It's the area that by default has "Internet" and
"email" shortcuts. I would like to put there programs the child would
normally use. I can find no folder or location where under explore to put
the shortcuts I want. Right mouse click lets me remove items but not add
them.

2. I think that by default XP puts there the "most used" programs. I do not
want that behavior because it would change the shortcuts that appear there
and that would be confusing. How do I change that behavior if it exists.

Thanks.

Find an existing shortcut to the program on your Start menu, or
the program itself, and right click on it. Select "Pin to Start
menu" from the drop down menu.

Good luck

Thank you.

How about XP putting the most recently used programs there, was I wrong?

Thanks again.

To prevent the most frequently used programs from appearing in
that left column, do the following:

Go to Start -> Control Panel and double click the "Taskbar and
Start Menu" icon.
In Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, click on the Start Menu
tab.
Hit the Customize button.
This should bring up Customize Start Menu.
On the General page, change the entry next to "Number of
programs on Start menu" to 0.

Good luck
