Configuring Outlook 2003 to connect to OWA outside the LAN

I have Exchange 2003 SP2 set up in a front-end back-end topology, Using OWA,
and am having issues connecting outlook 2003 from outside the LAN.
Everything works peachy from inside, but from outside I keep getting "cannot
connect to the exchange server" errors.

What am I doing wrong?

Yes. We have had no issues on that end. However, we are using mobile
devices to retrieve mail, and due to constraints in their setup, we need
their local Outlook programs to get mail from the exchange server as well as
other mail sources. This setup was not my idea, but I am now stuck with the
problem of how to make it work! :p
