configuring fax console???

Hi, I have been trying to configure my computer to send &
receive fax's. I was told that other than a compatable
modem I wouldn't require anything else?
I keep getting error message; problem occured while
trying to receive fax/ was unable to receive fax.
Something along those lines. There is nothing similar in
troubleshooting. Any answers for me please???
