Computers falling out of domain

I have a couple computers (Windows XP SP 2) that routinely drop out of the
domain. When you attempt to login with a domain account it says that a
domain controller cannot be found. To login you must either use a local
account or unplug the network card and used the cached login. When you
undomain the workstation and put it back in it works fine for awhile. Any
ideas?

The first thing I'd check would be DNS settings - all clients in a domain
should use only the domain DNS server for name resolution and the domain DNS
server should be using either root hints or a forwarder to resolve names
outside the domain. Research on this topic should begin here:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...00/server/reskit/en-us/cnet/cncf_imp_ZZUI.asp

If DNS is properly configured, I'd check both the server and workstation
event logs for failure events at the time of log-on to see if clues can be
garnered from them.

The DNS works great (the best evidence being that it allows me to rejoin the
domain very quickly). In checking the logs I don't see anything out of the
ordinary. This is a very simple domain (1 server). The odd thing is that
only the new XP SP2 machines are doing this. I haven't heard of
compatibility problems with W2K SP4. Any other ideas out there?
