My computer will not start up. It boots and and gets to a screen where it
asks if I want to start windows normally. I do that and then the window xp
logo appears and then it reboots and starts all over again. Right after the
window xp logo appears something runs across the screen and disappears to
fast to see what it is.

I have norton internet and antivirus and the sp2 pack of windows xp
installed. However, I have not installed anything recently. Just prior to the
problem my comcast high speed internet went down and when it came on that is
when I had the problem.

I can boot from the CD-rom and have done a check with a cdrom norton and I
have no viruses, but it is not the latest viruses on the disk and I dont know
how to down load them onto the cdrom from norton site.

If you continually get the boot options menu, select Safe Mode.
Otherwise, just after the power key, type F8 repeatedly about twice per
second to boot into Safe Mode If it successfully boots to Safe Mode,
select System Properties control panel, Advanced tab, Startup and
Recovery tab, uncheck Automatically restart, check Write an event to the
event log. Reboot. Now see if an error message is displayed, write it
down *exactly as shown on the screen* and reply with the error text.

I just started having the exact same problem with my machine. I tried doing
what you suggested below but didn't see any "error message" displayed.
There was a very quick blue screen that appeared (with text) for a split
second prior to getting the original message stating that Windows could not
start normally, but this "blue screen" popped up so quickly that I was
unable to read what was there.

Is there any other way to read, and then tell you, what was "written" to the
"event log?"

Thanks

Stop the computer from rebooting on error by doing this:

To specify what Windows does if the system stops unexpectedly

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to
a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing
this procedure.

1.. Open System in Control Panel.
2.. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
3.. Under System Failure, select the check boxes that correspond to the
actions you want Windows to perform if a Stop error occurs:
a.. Write an event to the system log specifies that event information
will be recorded in the system log.
b.. Send an administrative alert specifies that your system
administrator will be notified.
c.. Automatically reboot specifies that Windows will automatically
restart your computer.

I'm having the same problem, however, I cannot get the computer to log on even in safe mode.

To add an issue I cannot even get the computer to load into the BIOS. Hence creating a dead loop.

Any help would be awesome.
Thank you.
