My PC wont shutdown, it just goes threw all the steps and then restarts..this
is really annoying the hell out of me, how can i fix this problem?

Go to Computer | Properties | Advanced System Settings | Advanced | Startup
and Recovery

Remove the check from "Automatically Restart"

Now, when your computer crashes during shutdown you will be presented with a
blue screen (BSOD) that will have show a great deal of information. Write
down the information *precisely* as it appears. Then post this information
back here for people to review.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, i did as you said, and nothing came up,
it just restarted again.

Check your bios startup/power settings to see if there is anything there
that would cause a restart.

Hello Alan,

Can you check in your BIOS to see if Wake on Lan or anything similar is
enabled?

i checked my bios earlier today, for wake on lan, pci ps2 keyboard etc, and
they are all disabled.

Once, and only once, I found that a defective reset button on a computer was
stuck in a closed position. This caused the same problem. The only way the
owner could turn off the PC was by cutting the power with the rear switch
after the computer shut down, and before it began to reboot. A new switch
solved the problem.

the physical reset button on the case??? my pc doesnt have one so..
definetely not my problem, just a power button on my case, and its definetely
not sticking.

man im really started to get extremely frustrated with this, i dont know
what to do.

i really dont know what else to do

ive updated all drivers, uninstalled the ony and only non-working driver, my
network adapter <adapter still works tho?> could the card itself be causing
this problem? i doubt it

tried unplugging all devices from usb etc.

only thing i havent done yet is upgraded my bios...anyone know where else i
might be able to find some help?

besides calling and paying microsoft...

I am serious here. What makes you think it is a operating system/Microsoft
problem?

There could be a shorted semi-conductor in the power supply that is keeping
the computer from totally shutting down. It would be the same as having a
physically stuck "on" switch.

I would take your computer to a qualified technician, one who has the
instruments to test power supplies - or at least one who could substitute in
a P/S of known good quality for testing purposes.

because i know im not the only person having this issue.

im not sure if its hardware related, but i doubt it, everythings functioning
fine, and the PSU is brand new and of good quality, this is a completely hand
built performance enthusiast pc, im not saying its windows, but im guess it
is, but im also thinking it could be bios related, who knows, but until i
find out, ill be searching everywhere.

and i dont think ill be moving my extremely heavy...water cooled case,
anywhere, because its just to dang difficult, yeah i can lift it, yeah i can
get it in the truck, but its still a pain...when i have about all the
resources i need pretty much at my fingertips.

as far as some sort of switch stuck on or some wrong voltage or something,
could i just try unplugging the power switch from the mobo maybe?

/shrug

and yes i know you didnt say voltage and thats not what i meant either, i was
just trying to reference it but was being lazy..dont ask..and now that i
re-read it it looks stupid haha..so i wanted to clarify that i doubt its a
shorted psu causing the problem, of course i wont say that its not, because i
just dont know

You could try this:
1. Download PCLINUXOS
2. Burn the iso
3. Boot the cd, using the first choice listed.
4. After the cd boots, you will answer a few questions
5. From the log-in screen select shut down computer from the system menu

6. The computer will start the shut down process.
7. When it completes the shut down process, it will eject the cd
automatically.
8. When you press enter the computer should turn off.

If the computer shuts off, then the error is operating system
(drivers,etc)
If the computer reboots it is machine related.

You have not affected any data on your machine.

Keep the disk..you may need the Live CD feature to save data....if your
operating system should ever stop working.

im going to run threw my bios and double check all the settings when i get
the chance..work is killing me, and after that ill try what you said, thanks
for informing me of that, it will be very useful to help determine whats up,
ultimately i may just try reinstalling vista

im wondering if because i did the vista upgrade bypass is why im having
problems

<had the upgrade disc but no xp on system, installed vista flat out without
having xp by using the bypass> Bypass is just not entering the product key
until after you have installed vista, then when you in windows run the vista
cd again and click upgrade, and enter cd key.

LoL now that i think about it..thats a great way to save about $150 tho that
is not the reason why i needed to do the bypass..

I am having the same problem. Mine just started recently though. I will be
doing the suggestions in this thread and hoping for the best.

As far as changing how the power off icon works I am not sure that is the
option for me, I have everything set up like xp so I just press start>
shutdown> then use the drop down option for shut down..

It goes through all the steps of shutting down then just stops at the point
where the actual power to the MB should turn off, and my monitor does not go
into sleep mode.

I have checked the ACPI settings in bios but I have not been able to find
anything in vista like the old APM check box in XP.

Ok I think I at least know what part of the problem is. Its NVIDIA GPU
driver related... I used the remove programs option and removed the NVIDIA
drivers then started my computer in safe mode and used Drive Cleaner Pro and
then restarted the computer and shut down the computer several times with no
problems. I re loaded the current latest drivers and the problem came back.
I repeated the process above and tested again with no problems. I loaded the
current NVIDIA Beta drivers and the problem returned.

Ok for me this was 100% an Nvidia driver problem (nTune). Here is how I
fixed the Problem.

1. Searched for the word Nvidia from the start button search option.

2. Deleted all folders that said Nvidia Corperation (NOT THE VIDEO DRIVERS,
and also NOT the Nvidia files made by Drive Cleaner Pro) NOTE: There was one
(1) Reg entry that came up during the search that was from nTune which I
deleted.

3. Used Run>regedit >find on the word nvidia and deleted all references to
nTune.

4. Used "Advanced Windows Care V2" to clean any Reg entries that were not
valid.

5. Removed the Nvidia video drivers using add/remove programs.

6. Tested that the computer would now restart and shut down with no problems.

7. Restarted computer in Safe Mode, and used “Drive Cleaner Pro†to remove
all Nvidia driver stuff.

8. Restarted the computer and used "Advanced Windows Care V2" to clean any
Reg entries that were not valid.

9. Downloaded and installed the latest approved Nvidia graphics drivers from
Nvidia.com.

10. Tested the computer again to ensure it would shutdown fully and restart
with no hangs ups....

I am not sure that this is the same issue as everyone else is having but
this fixed my problems .. Good luck.
