computer wont come out of standby

I have XP Pro SP1. I have it set up so that when I shut the lid on the
laptop, it goes into standby. Recently, when I shut the lid, the computer
screen goes blue and says, "preparing to standby", but never goes into
standby. I have to pull the power plug and battery in order to get out of it.
Any suggestions???

A) If you recently added new hardware to your computer it might conflict with
standby. If this is the case then go to Start -> Control Panel -> System ->
Hardware -> Device Manager. Go to the newly installed hardware right click on
it and choose Properties. If it has a Power Management tab go to it and
change one of the two settings at a time and see if this makes a difference.

B) Might have a problem with your hiberfil.sys file. Go to Start -> Control
Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate tab and uncheck "Enable Hibernation". Now
you will need to restart your computer and it will delete the hiberfil.sys
file. You will not be able to put your computer into hibernate/standby mode
until you enable hibernation again - just go through the same steps as before
just check the "Enable Hibernation" box.

C) Unknown system problem - look for errors in the Event Viewer. Start ->
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event viewer.

Other than that there is a slight possiblility that the problem could be
software related. You could try a System Restore to a time before you started
getting the problem. Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->
System Restore and then follow the steps to restore the computer to an
earlier time.
