At first it booted up but the monitor had a bunch of crazy lines on it. Now
the screen stays blank. I tried to boot via the CD Drive (no floopy drive on
machine) with no luck. The CD spins awhile then stops. Nothing shows on the
screen. WinXP Pro, laptop.

Try booting in Safe Mode, and/or with a different monitor.

The lines on screen indicated that its a graphics problem. If like the other
user said you can get to safe mode then you have a corrupt display driver

As you are using a laptop you will need to plug the external monitor in &
fress example: Fn & F5 /F8 together. It depends on your machine

Did you change the device boot order in the BIOS for the CD drive to be the
first device? If so and it won't boot from a bootable CD, then there are
hardware problems, not an XP OS issue. I suggest you post to a hardware
newsgroup or contact the tech support for the computer, or take it to a
competent computer repair shop.

EVER?

If the answer is yes, then you have some heavy hardware problems.
Since many/most laptop mainboards have integrated video, you'd better
start shopping for a new computer.

Please reply to the OP.

You DARE to tell Newbie Coder (who's got 27 - or izzit 57 - years
experience with computers how to reply here?

If I remember right, ND doesn't know how to quote either.

It won't go into safe mode. The problem started after I tried to update some
drivers. I will try to hook up an external monitor.

I managed to get it into safe mode with a 2nd screen attached. Also, I can
now boot from the OS CD. I am willing to format the drive if it will solve
the problem. However, I cannot read anything on the screen if I boot from
the CD although I see there is text under the screen gibberish. I can get a
DOS screen from Safe Mode. There are vertical bars on the screen so its
difficault to read text. Any suggestions.

What did you do to get it to boot from the CD? Send the laptop in for
repair.
