Computer will not turn off

I have XP Home Edition with all the requisite MS upgrades installed but
within the last few days my computer will not turn off or restart when I go
to START \ TURN OFF COMPUTER in the usual way.

I am always online (high speed connection) but would like to turn it off
over night if possible.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

What happens when you try? Any error messages?

Try holding the off button in until is does go off. Then see if it does it
again.

Yes, holding in the off button until it turns off is O.K. but it simply
returns to the "status quo" again and still won't shut down by the normal
method.

Thanks for this URL Frank. I will read it through carefully and try some of
the suggested solutions (warily!).
