you can boot up with
a windows cd then select
the "recovery console" instead
of "setup/installation".

once you get to the file
system prompt>

type and enter:

chkdsk
fixboot

then type/ enter:

exit

remove your
cd and see if you can
access your o.s. again.

Thank you,,,i didn't get a windows xp cd with my computer i will have to buy
one.

well, you can borrow
one from a friend or something,
since the recovery tools on any
cd can be used for issues like
yours.

you might want
to see if the manufacturer
for your computer has any
suggestions at their website.

however, since it is a
dell, then it came with an oem
version of windows, which
might be cheaper than a
retail version.

there should be a sticker
on you machine with the
windows key on it and will
likely have oem in it somewhere.

however the pc might
have a hidden partition
with a recovery method, like
laptops have.

you should double dell's faq's
and knowledge base for your
model.

well the sticker says windows xp home edition not sure if that is oem didn't
see it on the sticker anywhere .would the xp upgrade home edition work,i
tried to repair with the othe windows cds i had it wouldn't work,

the letters oem are
embedded in the
sequence of letters
and numbers comprising
the product key on
the sticker.

if oem isn't embedded
then the o.s is likely
a regular version.

winxp upgrade cd
has the recovery tools
on it as well.

however, with upgrades
there is a time, not always,
that you will need a
full version of an older
operating system on hand.
the requirements are on
the product packaging.

You should call them and ask for the means of restoration. Did you get a
users guide? .
