My computer freezes on shutdown when I use Start-Turn off Computer-Restart.
Any suggestions?

Hi Doug,
Try to look in Event Viewer for any Error messages, it is may be a hardware
failure or software didn't release the Memory when you closed your
application and shut down.
Again I will check for Malware and Viruses and be sure my computer is clean.
Hope this helps
please report bac

about it.

Doug, just for a test type the following on the Start-Run line,
(this should restart your computer)

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00

That worked, it was a little delayed at the Windows is shutting down message,
but it shutdown and restarted automatically. Now how do I get that to work
by using the Start button?

On the Start-Run line, type:

SFC /SCANNOW

Have your XP CD handy to install for reference.

Doug, if you want to create shortcut Icons on the desktop
Create shortcuts by right clicking the desktop and select New - shortcut.

Typing the following for the address:

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 ( this will shutdown the computer)
%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00 ( this will reboot the computer)

You can create shutdown icons from the change icons menu if you right click
the Icon after you finish creating them.

I have done this quite a few times and it checks completely but nothing
different happens.

Thanks for the help Squire, I was able to fix my problem by using the Device
Manager and selecting in Advanced tab to adjust for performance and turn off
Automatic Updates. I will definitely use your suggestion and make those
icons so that when this happens again, I can successfully and effectively
shutdown my computer. Thanks again, you were very helpful.
