Computer very unstable

I am running Windows XP Professional with all of the current updates. My
computer is homemade and here are the components: Intel motherboard, P4 2.53
GHz, 1 Gig Ram, NVidia Video card. My computer has been acting weird for
some time now, but lately it has taken a turn for the worse. My monitor
keeps flickering on and off and I'm getting the errors "Invalid scan freq."
and "Invalid sync." The monitor will just come back on whenever it wants and
sometimes the computer is locked up. The monitor is a Gateway VX900 and the
video card is an NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE. I downloaded and installed the
most up to date driver for the video card to no avail.

The computer just has a tendency to lock up whenever it feels like it. My
cd writer has been locked up for several days now. The writing light just
stays on and I can't open the drive nor does it show up in My Computer. In
addition, my internet just keeps 'going out', but I haven't yet figured out
if it's due to my ISP (AT&T DSL) or my computer. It usually works if I turn
both the modem and the computer off and then cycle the modem back on, then
the computer.

I have not done anything that I don't normally do. I run Norton Internet
Security, Lavasoft AdAware, and SpyBot on a regular basis. I recently also
had the problem with IE 7 where it would lock up and quit responding, but I
fixed that with the reset to factory settings as described on the microsoft
support website. Another problem that I have is that sometimes when I shut
my computer down, windows shuts down but the fans and such in the tower
continue to run. The monitor acts as if it is not receiving a signal with
the power light flashing. I just have to switch the power supply off to turn
the computer off. Just yesterday when all of the above symptoms were
occurring, check disk finally ran and supposedly deleted/repaired a bunch of
messed up files.

If anyone can be of any help, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,

John

Thats easy enough to figure out,at shutdown, power off, move the cdrom to
another IDE connection (set the jumper pins as needed-slave/master),next
reconnect or switch youre 4-pin hardware plug connections.Start pc,more than
likely youre looking at a pwr supply problem or the board itself. Also, try
eliminating
add on hardware,as you eliminate/add,note the function of the pc,the pwr
supply
can easly be checked at any pc shop-free,as you wait...

Thanks for the help, guys. My board has a built in video card, so I will
plug the monitor into that port to determine if my separate card is the
problem. If that is not the case, then I guess I will have to have the power
supply and board examined. Thanks again.
