Computer Very Slow

My wife's computer is very slow.

Window's Defender will not start
Norton anti virus will not start

Shell Hardware Detection Service causes the system to go extremely slow.
Windows installer has quit working so I cannot uninstall other programs or
reinstall windows defender.

Is there a problem with the recent updates that are causing this. Had the
same problem with my own computer and finely reinstalled windows xp in
frustration, i would like to avoid this with my wife's computer.
 
Sounds like the computer is infested with malware.
