Computer turns itself on.

My pc had been running fine until the other day when it began to turn itself
on. It happens after a complete shutdown. It is not a restart problem such as
I have read in some of the messages already posted and in the knowledge base
articles. It doesn't turn on immediately after shutdown; it can be an hour or
more after and even when it hasn't been on at all. It just switches itself
on.
The problem seems to have arisen since I installed a dialler to my internet
provider followed by a major download of critical updates (first time pc has
been online since it was built a year ago) plus I also installed AVG
antivirus, spybot, mailwasher, ad-aware and zone alarm. These are the only
changes made...no changes to hardware.

I have read various posts and knowledge articles but can't find anything
that quite fits my problem. I am not technically minded so please can you
bear that in my mind if you can help me.

Hi rosebud,

Do you know how to go into your Computer "BIOS"? It is a Setup Utility that controls the computer. What is the Name of your Computer Bios? Better yet, what is the Brand and Model Number of your computer, if you didn't build it?

Hi.
I am sorry to say I don't know how to go into my computer BIOS and I don't
know the name of it either...boy do I feel dumb! My pc was built by someone
else so has no brand or model number. Sorry I am not helping much.

Hi again.

I have been ploughing through the help section and hopefully I have found
the BIOS info you requested. (taken from system tools/system info)

BIOS version/date = American Megatrends Inc. 080010,31/12/2003

Hope this helps.

"rosebud" - Computer power on/off is software controlled and not
"mechanically" by use of the switch.
Power is continuously applied to the computer - even when "off". Pressing
the power switch activates the software control - software control is a
reason why, if the computer downs not shut down normally, it requires
holding the power button in for several seconds to shut down.
I know above is "verbose" - but it looks as if you have a program. probably
with a timed function, turning the computer on. Dialer good suspect - check
the Task Scheduler.
Consider using System Restore to date prior to application installation.

I can't believe how stupid I am!! When I was looking at the help section
about BIOS info I was on the other pc so gave you wrong info....stress is my
only excuse! So sorry.

BIOS info = Award Software International Inc F5. 29/10/2004

My sincere apologies.

BTW pc has just started up again by itself about an hour after I shut it down.

Hi rosebud,

As the Computer first boots, press and release the Del key.

When the CMOS Setup Utility opens, hit the Aroow down until you highlight Power Management Setup.
Press the Enter Key.
PME Event Wake Up Disable it.
ModemRing On Disable It.
Resume By Alarm, unless you have a TV Tuner installed, Disable it.
Power On By Mouse Disable it.
Power On by Keyboard Disable It.

Press F10 to Save Changes.
