Computer time keeps changing

We are using Windows 2000 and have a battery backup unit.
Every Monday our generator does its test and when that
happens the battery backup does a brief interupt of
power. The date and the time then changes. Is there a
problem with our computer or the battery backup? VERY
FRUSTRATING!

I suspect the CMOS battery on the PC motherboard has expired and needs
replacing.

Jeff - the battery Bob's talking about is like a watch battery, easily
removed/replaced on the board, costing a couple bucks at Walgreens and
other such stores everywhere. Except, of course, downtown Afghanistan.

Replacing the battery should do the trick, but if you're lazy like me then
you could also load one of those time syncing utilities found across the
Internet and have it sync the time every minute or so. I have the same
problem on one of my DC's at home and even if the power fails it will
automatically sync back up once it's restarted.

.... and once you go online and on the next scheduled poll interval for
your time sync utility.

I use Socketwatch to sync up my time. There are lots of other
utilities. Windows XP comes with it (right-click on the clock display
in the system tray and look under the Internet Time tab) but I couldn't
get it to work, but then Socketwatch is better, anyway. If you are in a
domain, it is likely your time gets sync'ed when you login.
