Windows XP Home Edition - new computer (4weeks old). On 3 occasions during
this time the machine has started to switch off and restart over and over
again. When it does start and stay loaded, any action I take (keystroke,
mouse move, mouse click) causes switch off. If I shut down the system for a
time i.e. an hour or more, everything returns to normal.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You have a hardware problem.
Since yours is a new computer, contact the company from whom you purchased
it for instructions for having it repaired under warranty.
Good luck.

Power supply is the first thing to check when this happens.

I dont know if you could narrow it down so quickly to a power supply..

What kind of computer is it? Did you build it yourself? Do you know who
makes which components? What im trying to get at - is it a cheap power
supply, or is it a decent brand like Enermax, Thermaltake etc. Who makes
the motherboard? How old is it?

How does it shut down. DOes it gracefully shut down, ie, say "Windows is
shutting down" - does it instantly reboot? Does it blue screen of death
and then reboot?

I didn't say that I'm certain that that's what it was, but, yes, it would be
the first thing that I would check. Since I've got about 20 of them laying
around in my shop, and I can swap one out in about 10 minutes, and would
then be able to tell very quickly if the same problem occurred, yes, that
would be my first approach. But this might be a fully-waranteed computer,
and the poster might not know how to do this, so my approach might not be
the universally best approach.

If it's the mobo, he's going to definitely want to send it back. No point
in going to any great length to fix a brand new box. But really, a power
supply is no big deal.

If you built it yourself, check out the power supply and CPU fan.. also run
a memory check.. you may have a bad stick in there.. undue pressure on the
motherboard during assembly installation of memory, cables or CPU may have
damaged it.. is the motherboard mounted correctly?..

If you bought it from a store, take it back TODAY..

Thank you all for your swift responses and your helpful comments. I've been
in touch with the store I bought it from by email as their telephone charges
are £1.50 per minute for support. I am awaiting their response. I do intend
to return the machine for replacement or repair. Thanks again.
