Computer Suddenly Turns Off!

I'm not sure if this problem is with my computer itself,
with my CD-ROM drive, or with Windows XP, but it never
happened before I just got the computer upgraded to
Windows XP Pro. I will be using the computer and all of
a sudden it will just turn off! It doesn't go into shut
down, the computer just turns off. And it won't turn
back on until I unplug the power cord from the back and
replug the cord back in. Every time this has happened
(once yesterday and three times today) I have been using
the CD-ROM drive. I just upgraded to XP this week so I
have been using the CD-ROM to load all my software and
files back onto my computer after the hard drive had to
be reformatted from NT (which was partitioned).

I am wondering if this is just a safety feature for the
CD-ROM drive getting too hot from too much use? Or is
something wrong with my computer, XP, or the CD-ROM
drive? I loaded on all my programs (except one that I'm
still looking for the disc for) but only one CD of my
files (out of nine CDs - I have a lot of files and big
ones at that!) so far.

Thanks for any help y'all can offer!!! :-D

Sounds like your power supply either is overloaded or going bad.
How many drives you got hooked up?
In any case, i would get to the bottom of it and fix the problem
or you will wind up with a trashed HDD.

I've got 1 ea. of CD-ROM, CD-R, Zip, and floppy drives.
My computer never turned off on me before the upgrade. I
just upgraded to XP Pro, put a new sound card in (a
better one to replace the one whose inputs stopped
working), and added a wireless networking card so my
computer can finally connect to my home network.

I stopped using my CD-ROM drive to copy my files from my
back-up CDs and, after a cool-off period while I watched
TV and ate dinner, used my CD-R drive to finish the nine
CDs of files. It worked just beautifully.

xp just does that from time to time. usually my computer
reboots itself if i leave it on overnight doing nothing but
perhaps running its screensaver problem. i mean program.

,put a new sound card in

Check the card is seated in it's socket correctly. An intermitent short
circuit somewhere would cause exactly the problem you are seeing.

It doesn't reboot itself; the actual computer (less the
monitor, of course) just suddenly turns off (like it
would in a power outage - except it can't be one 'cause I
have APC Back-UPS on it) while I am sitting at the
computer using it.

Check the BIOS settings for CPU protection - if you have the temp control
set too low the machine can power down when the CPU temp reaches a certain
place...
XP is a much more intense experience for both CPU and Power supply, not to
mention the memory !!

Greetings --

It sounds like your power supply is overheating.

Thanks to y'al for your help. I think it was just that
the CD-ROM drive was run for far too long (don't ask!) and
got too hot 'cause all - including the CD-ROM drive - is
working just fine now.
