Computer slows when printing

I have a very fast processor, motherboard and tons of
RAM, but when I print it is almost impossible to do
anything because the computer becomes so slow. Any way
to make this go away?
 
I've seen this happen only when an older printer is connected via a parallel
or LPT port. The port is not fast enough to keep up with the data flow and
the PC slows down to meet its speed.

Solution is usually to switch to printing via USB.
