Computer slowing down

I'm having a few probs with my computer.

The first couple of hours are fine, with task manager saying that my CPU
usage averages 5%, Page file usage 450MB and looking fairly safe.

After a while I come back to my computer and folders open and scroll so slow.

When I recheck Task manager it says that my processor is running at 100%.
Under the 'processes' tab it shows the CPU is being used up by explorer.exe.
Even with internet explorer closed or any other program shut down, I have to
log off windows and log back on just to get the speed back up.

What will happen if I highlight explorer.exe and click 'end process'? will
it cause any harm?

Thanks for any replies

No, it won't cause any harm.

End Process on explorer.exe will make your Desktop, Taskbar and all programs
disappear. This can be startling. Restarting explorer will bring
everything back.

To kill explorer and restart it.

Open the Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Escape | Click on the Processes tab | Locate and highlight
explorer.exe | Right click explorer.exe | Click End Process | Click
Yes to the Task Manager Warning that pops up | Click File on the Toolbar |
Click New Task (Run...) | Type in: explorer | Click OK
