Computer running really slow

I have an XP machine that is running really slow and cannot access the
network. The NIC in Task Manager is showing a connection of 10Mbps. When I
look at the switch connections, it is telling me that it is connected at
100Mbps.

What could be causing this to happen?.

The NIC in task manager? task manager shows performance
files open and utilization, what is using the most
utilization what is the %? If you go into device manager
look at the properties of your NIC what is it set to? Is
it a 10/100 card? Make sure to set this at auto since.
