Computer Restarts on Own!

David Hurwitz

My XP machine will shut down normally and turn itself off with no
error message. Within 5 minutes, it restarts by itself after being
totally off. I have had to unplug the power cord to keep it off when
I go on vacation. Any suggestions? This is different than the usual
restart problem. My computer doesn't reboot when I try to shut down;
it turns itself off, waits until I leave the room then turns itself
back on. Thanks for any help.

Yeah, I thought this one was really weird. It's not a big problem. I
leave the machine on most of the time. And when I go on vacation, I
just unplug it after shutdown. But I would like to know what's
happening.

Go into BIOS and make sure to turn of Wake On Lan and/or Wake on Ring.

I think Wake on LAN or Wake on Ring may be enabled. Enter your BIOS setup
and look for wake conditions.

You have contracted the MS-Blaster Virus. Search this and other newsgroups
for keyword Balster or RPC (Remote Procedure Call). Not all antivirus
software detect it correctly.

Juan,

Please tell me your post is a joke. If it's not, please read messages
very carefully before replying. If, after re-readint the original
post, you still say it's MSBlast, then please stop posting your advice
matter-of-factly. This is clearly NOT MSBlast.

Blaster shuts systems down and restarts them. The OP computer is
starting up AFTER they shut it down. Now think - how can a computer
that is not turned on be running a worm that will turn it back on?
