I have xp. 4 times this week my computer has rebooted
while I was surfing the net. I get the "system has
recovered from a serious error" note. Then, it sends an
error report. 3 times it couldnt tell me what the cause
was, once it said it was my modem. ( motorola sb4101 )
Could the modem actually cause my computer to illegally
shutdown?

Yes, especially if the modem connects through a USB port. Cable modems draw
a lot of power and when connected to a USB port can cause the system to
become unstable and crash. If your cable modem has the option to connect to
an Ethernet card, use that instead and see if the problem goes away.

If not, open Control Planel, open System, go to the Advanced tab, click
Settings under "Startup and Recovery," under System Failure, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" and click ok and reboot the system if
prompted.

By default, XP is set to restart on errors. The above will cause the system
to blue screen instead. The error message on the screen might give a clue
as to the source of the issue.

Also check Event Log, open Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools, go to
Event Viewer, look for errors that correspond to the system spontaneously
restarting or otherwise crashing if you remove the check from "Restart on
Errors," double click the error, the information within may give a clue as
to the source of the issue.

Hi Lisa,

By default, WinXP restarts the system upon a failure. This is to protect the
system from damage. You can disable this (temporarily) from the Control
Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and recovery settings. Doing so will cause the
system to "blue screen" with an error message that you can research.

You might also start/run eventvwr.msc and check the system logs for clues.
