Computer 'Pausing'

It is a little hard to explain, but at random times when my computer is
reading/writing my hard drive, My hard drive just randomly stops responding.
When this occurs,My mouse still can move around the screen, so I know it isnt
a GPU problem. My CPU monitor shows the activity around 1% per core, and my
virtual memory remains about 60%.
I will give a couple examples of common
times that it occurs: When my desktop is loading after I log in, When I am
autosaving in a videogame(which causes it to crash), when I am downloading
information off the internet .
My HDD is WD
Raptor, 680i Motherboard, 8800GTX GPU, QX6700 CPU, Crucial Ballistix 2g ram

Hi,

I would suspect the memory is faulty. Click start, type 'memory' and the
diagnostic tool should be in the menu. Select it, then follow the prompts to
restart the machine and let the diagnostic run. I've had two machines I put
together recently both have problems with Ballistix sticks.

Did extended memory diagnostic test(3 hours) and no errors,
Also did Western Digital Extended test and no errors.

I have no Idea what I should check next

Hi,

If you've eliminated hardware causes, then it's only logical to think that
there is a software issue. I would begin by looking at background processes,
using the msconfig utility to limit what is loading at boot.

The pausing was prominent when I had just installed Windows Vista. I first
discovered the error above when trying to download Microsoft Office and
Nvidia Drivers

So in that Idea, would it be a Microsoft or driver bug?

Okay! I'm having EXACTLY this same problem. Has anyone found the
answer? I started with the Asus Striker Extreme, and now on the BFG
nForce 680i. The problem did not go away. I have lately been trying
memory, but today I'm trying hard drive/SATA. Using Vista32. Here
are the specs:

E6600
Asus Striker Extreme; and/or BFG nForce 680i
Corsair Twin2x2048 6400 (using 2 or 4 sticks, problem same)
Western Digital Raptor 150gb 10k
CoolorMaster 850w

I have the same problem with a WDC WD1600YS SATA device. I tried to change
the power cable, but it still occurs sometimes. Maybe a windows bug????

In the last few days - when the weather was very hot - my Western Digital HDD
stopped more often causing that computer-pause thing. So I think the
HDD-pause was because of the overheating. It hasn't stopped since I provided
additional cooling.
