I've been reading through this forum for the past hour or so looking for an
answer to this problem. In doing so I was able to fix a couple of related
problems. (thanks chuck)

Here is the situation. We have multiple computers on our network, 8 total. 1
mac, 3 running xp pro, 4 running w2k pro.

Every computer can see each other via network neighborhood, they all can
access and share files. There is one computer (we'll call is rip) that gives
me the above error (subject line). The rip computer can see & access every
computer on our network. The other computers can ping the rip computer, but
can not access it.

The xp machines are the ones that really need to communicate seamlessly, the
w2k machines do not need to access the rip computer

I feel like I'm so close, but yet so far away.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for the feedback, but not knowing what specifically you found that was
useful, I'm going to have to repeat some of it.

The error "...not accessible...not have permission..." is very general, and can
have numerous (and multiple simultaneous) causes.

First, check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

If no help yet, please explain "one computer (we'll call is rip) that gives me
the above error..." a bit. Is that with any user logged in? Do you have
multiple users for that computer? What operating systems are involved (name,
edition, service pack level?)?? The more details the better.

I've had the same problem and I've followed some of the advice given like
turning off firewalls and disabling security progs.

In my case, we just got a new winxp pro machine and trying to add it to
existing network consisting of winme, win2k machines. The others can see
\\newcomp on the network but can't access it. I've done the netbios,
workgroup name, sharing, solutions but it doesn't work. I'm using Norton but
have disabled it. Any other ideas? Thanks.

It would be to everybody's benefit, including yours, if you were to start a new
thread, with a unique and descriptive subject.

Usually, the PC that is giving this error can not "authenticate" the user
account from the other PCs. If Simple File Sharing is turned off, you need
to have created the same useraccount on "rip" that the others are using.

Authentication problems are one of the possibilities, but there are several
others. It's not a bad idea to find out what field you're playing on, before
trying to decide the rules of the game.
