I am taking a computer class in school and have been given
the following problem, which I can't find an exact answer
for: What do you do when the computer locks up? How do
you shut down the computer so you save the data you were
working on? Does it always work?
Any help would be appreciated.

You configure the computer to do scheduled saves while you
are working on the file(s). If the program crashes, you
close it out, which may lose the data created since the last
save or it may save the data.

If the operating system crashes, common with W98/ME but not
with NT/XP. you can't exit gracefully, it has crashed.
Again, having the applications do routine and scheduled
saves is the first step.

A hard -reboot with the reset switch or holding the power
switch for several seconds, will start the OS again, but
data not saved will likely be lost.

There is no exact answer.

If your computer locks in XP you could also try ctrl-alt-del and try killing
off the offending process to get the system working again. If ctrl-alt-del
doesn't work either then you have lost anything you had not previously saved
either by manual saves or automatic saves (for example in Word)
