I recently upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP. Since
then I have noticed that my computer is much slower in
opening applications, such as control panel and others.
Sometimes it freezes on me and when I try to defragment,
it takes about 45 minutes every time. There is nothing
extra running in the background. It stays on 1% for about
10 minutes. Any information would be very helpful.

Thanks.

When you upgrade, your system's hard drive is very
fragmented. After 3-days of use, Windows XP will
use data from a Folder C:\Windows\Prefetch and the
layout.ini to optimize your disk drive. You can avoid
the delay, by downloading and using a tool BootVis.
However, If you want a much better comprehensive
defrag tool, go to http://www.raxco.com and download
their 30-day trial version of Perfect Disk 2000 Ver 6.
Please read the help, as PDisk utilizes two different
types of defrag sessions, GUI and boot-time. If you
do both you will notice that your start times and other
operations are much faster than before. However, the
first defrag session(s) will take a good amount of time.
(20-35 Minutes) After the 1st run, subsequent sessions
shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes max.
