Computer is slow

I don't know what the problem is, but all of a sudden,
parts of my computer are slow.

Parts--meaning when I open the "My Computer" icon on the
desktop it suddenly hangs. It becomes "Not Responding."
In another instance, when my computer starts up, it is
unusually slow. Also, I tried analyzing the hard drive
through the defragmenting tool and it was intermittently
hanging. On the other hand, when opening other folders or
running programs it is not slow, such as opening the "My
Documents" folder on the desktop or surfing the web.

What seems to be the problem? Virus?

A little background about my computer:
OS: Windows XP Pro
Processor: 2.5 Ghz
Hard drive: Total space 75 gigs, free space 9 gigs
Uses for computer: word processing and internet (web,
downloading, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
