computer is crazy

My computer started to respond really slowly last week.
Have tried clearing temp files and cookies.Have
downloaded and scanned for viruses. Now I am loosing my
icons on the task bar even though I have it set to be
visable at all times. I am also having trouble openong
programs from my desktop icons. I have to go in to my
start menu.

I assume the system came up clean for viruses.
