Computer hung up:

Robert

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, with Home XP, and DSL connection from
Verizon and have 20g's of free space on my hard drive which is small
by todays standard but still acceptable as I'm not much of a gamer.
Yesterday, I clicked standby instead of turning my computer off
because I thought I would be getting back to it within a reasonable
amount of time. Well, it didn't work out that way and when I did come
back to it nothing seemed to work so I tried re-starting it, however
when it came back up it couldn't access the Internet. I checked all
the connections, turned off my firewall, re-started the system several
times, and turned it completely off and then back on several times to
no avail and even restored the system to an earlier date thinking that
the settings had somehow gotten corrupted. Nothing worked! I finally
decided to call Verizon and during the call it finally connected to
the Internet all by itself.

I'm definitely NOT going to be using the stand by option again. I've
used it before and it seems it only causes problems.

Its a Dell. That means it comes chock full of diagnostics and other
tools to obtain facts. Currently nobody can help since no facts were
posted.

From the Dell CD, load and execute comprehensive hardware
diagnostics that execute without Wndows. Does the Network Interface
pass? If so, a fact is obtained - your computer's NIC hardware is
good. Move on to other suspects.

Windows is full of useful inforamtion such as Device Manager, system
(event) logs, and other useful tools such a ping and ipconfig that are
executed from Command Prompt. If any doubts, Windows has a Help
option to provide assistance.

The thing is that it usually it performs flawlessly and is now back to
normal. So I dont think it's problem, I think using Standby is the
problem which I won't be using ever again.

My heart hurts when I walk. So I stopped walking. My heart no
longer hurts. "So I don't think it's problem." Problem is solved?

It's a Dell. That means Standby works just fine in every machine.
It's a Dell. That means it has comprehensive system diagnostics to
find a failure before further problems develop. You are best advised
to perform those simple tests (and learn something new now that it is
easiest to learn). Standby is not the problem. If your computer
fails in standby, then other problems exist.

For example, do you have a failing and slowly getting worse memory
location? Failure to recover from Standby would be a 'canary in a
coalmine'. Your symptoms imply you have a problem. A problem that
may get worse when you can least afford it.

What do the system (event) logs report. Computers work around
failures and record those problems in system logs to be corrected at
your convenience.

Meanwhile another option is hibernate.
