Computer got real slow afer Norton Update and subscription expiration

My Norton updated last night- and the system seems very slow- its a 2.4GHz
Pentium. Today the antivirus says my subscription is expired- but its 3
weeks too soon- expires end of month.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am not particularly happy if this is a Symantec strategy to get me to
re-up my subscription- shut me off 3 weeeks early and slow my computer way
down- it takes about 3 minutes to start outlook express about 1.5 minutes to
load Internet Explorer- and takes a long time to shut programs down- forget
multitasking- computer freezes....

Hellllppppp

It gets even more interesting:
running zone alarm, all the rest: spybot, router, etc..
when I turn internet off through zone alarm or turn modem off- computer gets
much faster- seems to have processor at 75-100%. I can't find any
suspicious activity in Zonealarm- shut a lot of stuff off- deleted it- to
let it re-save it. I'd swear someone was downloading from my computer or
something- lots of CPU usage and I'm not doing much of anything- and when I
turn internet off- CPU usage drops down to zilch.

Ideas??

Thanks
Paul

You don't say what OS you're using but most seem to have a
performance monitor of some kind. Maybe you should monitor Internet
activity; kbytes sent/received per second, processor usage, memory
usage, etc. This could give you a clue if something is calling home
without your permission.

Win XP home. Windows task manager - networking tab shows no network
utilization...if that is considered a monitor...the performance tab shows
very low cpu usage this am- but it takes about 4 minutes for outlook express
to load.... 1 minute to bring up newsgroups.... every application seems to
take forever now to load. This all seems to go back to Norton AV update the
other night- everythign came to a screeching halt after that- I've rebooted
several times, shut off the router/modem, cold-started the system....ran a
virus scan...

Have you tried disabling NAV's real-time protection to see if that
really is the reason? I mean, if you are compromised and NAV isn't
detecting anything, it's not a real big risk to nix it. And, you can
always delete the NAV signature files, reboot and re download the latest
updates. You may have a corrupted D/L.

You need to troubleshoot and that's something you have to do on your
own, one variable at a time.

You have described the typical zombied computer that is busily sending
(relaying) spam. I get lots of it from compromised comcast cable
subscribers.

Hi Ernie,

Here's a handy bit of freeware that could help to diagnose system and
program activity in real time:

Yup. Most AV software isn't equipped to effectively check for Trojans
and other non viral malware. Additionally, there was a family of
viruses that disabled most detection software.

Try finding & running Webroot Spy Sweeper. I have Adaware and Spybot but
seem to get better results with this. It also installs a shield which runs
in the background using minimal resources. Good Luck

how can I find it and zap it-? I have win xp home sp2.... linksys router,
zonealarm on, spybot S&D on, winpatrol on at startup, My HD light stays lit
for periods, then my computer comes back for a spurt- then pauses again....
some speed comes back when I shut down or lock internet (either power off,
or internet lock with zone alarm...) but not all speed. I can't seem to
find anything. I am worried about the previous two messages looking like
someone wants me to visit a hack sight and sent themselves an email message
out of context to this thread.

Thanks
Paul

spyware sweeper found nothing on my pc.
I wonder if the HD is getting old... light stays on- doesn't flicker when
the PC freezes up- then when the drive light goes out- things tend to speed
up again.
