When booting my computer it goes to a blue screen after the welcome screen.
The curser is all taht appears. I have tried booting in safe mode and get to
a brief appearance 1-2 seconds of the tool bar with start at the bottom left.
Then nothing.
I also tried last known good configuration from the safe mode start up
screen and get to the welcome screen and the the blue screen again. During
the disk check phase I get a list of requests to convert folders to files
Y/N.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Try booting to xp cd,select R or repair at info screen, press enter key for
password,then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:EXIT Let xp restart,
remove cd.If that fails,boot to xp cd,install xp,repair this copy.You'll only
loose windows updates, all else stays intact...

Thanks Andrew
However all I have is a restore CD from Sony that erases everything. Any
other suggestions??

Go to http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994 and download the 6
diskette boot set images for your exact version of Windows XP. Create
the diskettes and use these to boot the Sony. When it stops at the
A:\> prompt enter the command:

CHKDSK C:

p.s. When you boot the computer normally and bring up the Startup Menu
(for Safe Mode etc.) is there an item on that menu that reads "Turn
off automatic restart on System Failure" or words to that effect? If
there is choose that option and see if that results in a "Blue Screen
Of Death" with a STOP error message. If it does then post the
information from the STOP message including he STOP code and all 4
parameters, back here.

Good luck

That should be

CHKDSK C: /R
