computer freezes

I began to have problems with windows 2000 ( I think that
it is Window related) approximately a week ago where the
mouse will freeze for anywhere from 20 seconds to 3
minutes completely disabling the computer until the mouse
becomes usable. The freezing occurs whether I am using
the Internet or not and I have had the cable modem checked
and it appears to be working correctly. I was curious if
anyone has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the
problem. I have all of the most recent critical updates
loaded and have run Adware, Spybot, etc to make sure that
there is not a virus of some type attached to a file.
I am at a loss as to I should do next and could use some
suggestions.

What kind of mouse do you have attached? Does your keyboard still function
while your mouse is frozen?
