computer freezes when using any type of scan program

Hello, i hope there is someone that can help me i have windows xp and a hp
computer anytime i go and do a scan my computer freezes. i thought it was my
antivirus program so i tried another one and the same thing happenend also
when i tried to do a spyware scan on aol it also froze my computer. the anti
virus program freezes on the windows folderC:1386 at different points inside
that folder anyone with any help i would apperciate it

Try doing Error Checking on the disk
