computer freezes USB2 driver problem?

My PC has been freezing up increasingly over the past few weeks. I have
checked the hardware, temperatures, etc and all seems OK. I have been through
all the startup files and cleaned out any rubbish. I have reduced the XP bits
and pieces taking memory resources. None of these seem to have made a
difference.

The PC operates OK when booted in safe mode.

Therefore, I have disabled all the devices (one by one) in Device Manager.

I have 5 original USB2 ports in the PC (Compaq desktop with Pentium D). When
I disable one of the USB controllers (the enhanced one) all the problems go
away. BUT all the USBs revert to 1.1 - this makes backups a little slow!!!
Trying to update the driver tells me that there is no newer driver available.

Today I deleted the USB controller drivers in Device Manager (Safe Mode) and
rebooted to reinstall the drivers. The problem came back!!!

Can anyone help me? I am moving home in 12 days and want to sort it before
then if I can as I will be without broadband for a little while.....

Have you downloaded the latest drivers?

You need Windows XP SP2 for USB2 drivers........try making sure ur drivers
are up to date.

You need to check IRQ allocations on the PC. Click Start, Run
(Type) MSinfo32 [OK]. Once the applet opens, expand the
Hardware Resources category and then the IRQs sub-category.
Make note of the highest IRQ # (15 or 23) and also locate the
Enhanced USB controller and post back all other devices that
might be sharing that same IRQ #.

You would also benefit from viewing a full table of Devices inside
device manager:
1.) Add System Variable named DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value = 1
2.) Open Device Manager, Click View & tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices

Then scan your USB category for any entries shown in diminished
tone or grayed out (Phantoms).

Yes updates are on automatic. I manually checked for any new ones a couple of
days ago. I am not aware of any new drivers.

That all sounds great. I have reactivated the enhanced controller and run
MSinfo32. It came up with two USB controllers using IRQ 23.
The first was:
Intel(R)82801G(ICH7 Family)USB Universall Host Controller - 27C8 (the first
of my 5 in the Device Manager list),
The second was: Intel(R)8 ..... Enhanced Host Controller -27CC (the last of
my 5 in DM)

You talk about 'posting back' the first device. How do I do that?

You also talk about adding a system variable to view the full table in DM.
Sounds extremely useful. Again how do I do that?

Sorry if I am a bit useless (the old story of a little knowledge being
dangerous ... but hopefuly I am learning all the time).

Instead of updating hardware drivers from Windows Update,it's always
better to visit the concerned manufacturer's site and download and
install the latest drivers from there.

In a normal ACPI setup, I've never seen the Enhanced (USB2)
controller sharing an IRQ with a Full Speed (USB-1) controller.
That's especially true of it using the highest order IRQ 23.

DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices is added from the System
applet, Advanced, Environment Variables (System category) in
Control Panel w/ Classic View enabled.

Something is tangled up somewhere - believe enabling full view
of Device Manager will help. How many PCI add-in cards do
you have installed in this PC ?

Hi

I have installed the environment variable (after I posted I looked around
and thought that that might be the way, but I was not sure).

There are no greyed out USB entries.

The only PCI card added to the machine is the video card (NVidia GeForce
6200SE TurboCache) supplied by Compaq/HP with the PC. The USBs, Firewires,
Network, Memory Card Readers, etc are 'on the case'. I did remove the
original modem from the PC as I was connecting to the net through my network.

Any suggestions? Can I redirect the USB controller (USB-1) to another IRQ?
17 looks clear. If so, how can I do that?

Windows XP overrides any BIOS control of IRQ mappings, so
there isn't a way to manually assign them without disabling ACPI
and that isn't an advisable thing to do and would likely make things
worse.

All I can recommend is that you disable any on-board peripherals
such as Firewire, Serial, Parallel that isn't used to lower the IRQ
requirements on the PC. I would also check and see how many
revisions down your BIOS firmware is from the latest available. I
would read the change log and see if any mention is made of USB
or IRQ issues fixed by a specific update.

Some HP/Compaq PCs have some unusual sub-system configurations
so it's difficult to give you more specific advise.

Hi

I tried closing down other hardware to free up IRQs. That did not resolve
it. However, the Compaq/Hp helpdesk gave some other things to try (again no
help) and then a BIOS update and a chipset update. These seem to have sorted
the problem. At least, I have managed to backup my HDD partitions to my
external USB drive (something that caused a freeze up every time for the last
two weeks).

It is not often that I praise helpdesks but they replied to EVERY email
withing 60 minutes, no matter what time of the day!

Thanks very much for your help, you are a star.

PS. The drivers still share the same IRQ! BUT EVERYTHING WORKS.

Thanks again
David
