My computer has been freezing up and I can't shut it
down. I can't turn it off with the power button so I
have to unplug it everytime it freezes. I have defraged
it. When I try to run check disk it tells me that
Windows is unable to complete the disk check.

when your PC freezes sometimes the Power switch to may have be pressed for 5
seconds to power down. This is a common setting

I tried that and during the first phase I get message
that says "Windows was unable to complete the disk check."

Time to do a little cleaning. Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download
Ad-Aware (Free) and run that on your system. Also, scan for viruses
(Free) here - http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914

Also, open Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Now remove any
software that you don't ever use or didn't install (assuming you know
you won't need it). Also, there may be quite a few services that are
running that don't need to be, but we'll tackle that later if we need to.
